Mains of Taymouth Farm Past |
It was
originally built as the Home Farm to Taymouth Castle which is located a mile
away on the other side of the River Tay. Taymouth Castle was built on land
originally where the first fortress of Balloch House once stood and was erected
as the new home for the Campbell Clan of Glen Orchy. Over the centuries the
Clan amassed land through feud and marriage and went on to be the largest, most
successful Estate in Britain.
The
Estate Village, now Kenmore Village and Mains of Taymouth Home Farm, now Mains of
Taymouth Country Estate and Golf Course were built at this time and ran as a successful
businesses. They were sold at auction at the end of the first World War in 1922.
This is
where we join the story. Mains of Taymouth was purchased by a gentleman builder
by the name of Duncan Menzies from Glasgow for his son to provide a living as a
successful dairy farm for the whole area.
4
generations of Menzies and the family involvement is still going strong. During
this time the Farm developed, to include a popular caravan park with the
addition of a shop and petrol pumps in the late 1950’s. The families dream of
having a golf course became a reality when a Mains of Taymouth Golf Club opened
in 1992 on former agricultural land. Meanwhile the reclaiming of the dilapidated
farm buildings continued to create who we are now The prestigious award winning
Mains of Taymouth with 43 properties the majority of which have the Scottish
Tourist Board 5* accreditation.
The
Mains of Taymouth Country Estate has come a long way throughout the last 100
years guided by the safe hands of the Menzies Clan. It continues to grow and evolve offering a tranquil holiday destination to enjoy the splendour and
majesty of our beautiful location as did Queen Victoria who honeymooned at
Taymouth Castle.
Why not
come and visit and be part of the history?
