Love is in the Air!!!

From mid-September to early November heralds the start of the rutting season.  Red deer battle for the right to mate with as many hinds as possible, sometimes impregnating 30 to 40 hinds during the rut! They are known as his ‘harem’.

Experiencing the rut in the wild like this is truly magnificent! The Atmosphere is filled with energy and testosterone! The biggest stags, roar, tilt their heads back and stare wildly, showing their powerful neck muscles and shaggy manes. This is usually enough to make any challengers to walk away, but sometimes it does come to a fight where they butt and clash antlers.

The red deer is Britain’s largest land mammal and it is estimated there are 400,000 in Scotland alone. Sixty or more can be gathered on a hillside where you will see the largest stag charging around keeping all his hinds together. The idea is to warn off his rivals, maybe smaller, younger ‘Lotharios’ who will stroll on the edges of the herd, waiting for their chance!

From the hilltops you can hear their mighty roar and what a magnificent sound it is, one not to miss.

For those of you who would like to get up close and personal with red deer Highland Safaris is a must! Here you can learn more about the habitat of the red deer and get to hand feed them.

With viewing figures of over 1.402 million it is no wonder that Outlander is so popular. At last the new release date for season 4 with thr tagline Brave the World has been announced for Sunday 4th November. We at the award winning Mains of Taymouth Country Estate & Golf Course cannot wait! On a recent dog walk round Faskally Forest there was great excitement with all the locations trailers and period clothing galore!

Fans of the show visit where many of the scenes were filmed and we are lucky enough to be right on their door step!

When Outlander author Diana Gabaldon dreamt up the idea I’m sure she never envisaged the success and the massive boost to Scottish tourism it would bring.

Why not don that period clothing and take to the hills and discover Outlander country for yourselves?

Rannoch Moor has been described as "the largest abstract painting the world" - a walk through this unique landscape of grass, heather, peat, water and mountains is an unforgettable experience and is no wonder that Sam Heughan the lead actor has been quoted as saying Kinloch Rannoch was his favourite location.

The Majestic splendour of Doune Castle near Stirling is featured in Season 1 of Outlander. It plays a leading role as the fictional Castle Leoch which is home to the Mackenzie clan. It also featured in the 20th century episode where Claire and Frank were visiting the castle ruins. It was built as the home of Regent Albany, ‘Scotland’s uncrowned king’.

Why not walk in the footsteps of rulers both real and fictional. Doune Castle is a popular filming location for not only Outlander but also Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Game of Thrones.

After your exhilarating day out return to the comfort and luxury of  Mains of Taymouth Country Estate and enjoy our wonderful accommodation and surroundings in the heart of rural Perthshire.

Whilst staying with us you can enjoy Perthshire's finest 9 hole Golf Course, The Courtyard Bar & Restaurant, the award winning Courtyard Shop & Deli  and stables all available onsite.
